Red Roots Volume 1 Review

Wow….. I went into this one completely blind. I made a point of not googling it beforehand, and I’m really glad I did.

Red Roots is an ongoing comic series published by Image Comics, written and illustrated by Lorenzo De Felici.

This collected edition brings together issues 1 to 5.

The story starts out feeling like a John Wick-style revenge plot. We have a Delta agent, codenamed Sand, seeking vengeance on the criminal underworld following the death of a loved one. What follows is a series of pages filled with beautifully drawn panels depicting some seriously brutal retribution.

We’re also introduced to Kate, a high school Biology teacher who comes home one day to find a head sitting on her couch.

Without getting into spoilers, both Kate and Sand — who we later find out is named Dante — are suddenly whisked away from our world and into another world entirely.

Their journeys are connected by an Orc-like being named Grit (love the name), who brings them into this strange new world. They’re brought there by a red root which connects to the Mother Root. The Mother Root brings people and beings from across the universe to this world to fight a never-ending war against creatures known as the Muted, who fight in complete silence.

We don’t yet know what criteria are used to determine who gets brought to this world, which is one of the many questions the story leaves hanging.

The volume does a fantastic job of setting up the narrative without giving too much away, and it absolutely leaves you wanting more.

I’ll definitely be carrying on with this series.

For me, it’s an easy 5 out of 5.
