*Thanks to NetGalley and IDW for this ARC of the audiobook version of The Last Ronin.*
I really enjoyed this one.
*The Last Ronin* is an iconic graphic novel depicting a dark future where only one of the TMNT remains alive and is hellbent on revenge against those who killed his family.
The Last Ronin was later adapted into a full novel in June 2026, written by Erik Burnham. The novel greatly expands on the narrative of the original graphic novel, and this is the audiobook version of that novel.
I’ll try my best to avoid any major spoilers.
As I mentioned, this book is set in its own continuity, where, around 17 years in the past, three of the four turtles, along with Master Splinter, were ambushed and killed. The fourth turtle, dubbed the Last Ronin, was believed to be dead but had actually survived in secret in the mountains of Japan, training for the day he would return to New York and take his revenge on the Foot Clan and its leader.
This is **not** like the turtles you know from the Saturday morning cartoon. This is grimdark, violent, full of death, murder and a *lot* of cursing… and I loved it.
Whoever initially pitched the idea of an R-rated *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* story is a genius. The story works wonderfully in novel form and has once again been adapted brilliantly into an audiobook.
It’s narrated by Robb Moreira, who does an excellent job bringing this world and its characters to life. His narration really added to the experience and made an already dark story even more immersive.
I enjoyed it so much that I’ve just bought the other two stories in the Roninverse in graphic novel form — *The Lost Years* and *Re-Evolution* — and I can’t wait to get stuck into them.
This is an easy **5 out of 5** for me, both for the audiobook and the original novel
